Develhope, Orange Digital Center, and GIZ cooperate to reduce youth unemployment in Egypt by empowering mobile developers through a free program in Cairo
The coding school Develhope, in partnership with Orange Digital Center Cairo and the German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ), is launching a pilot bootcamp to provide up-skilling training to young unemployed Egyptians based in Cairo. The initiative will empower 20 students with essential skills in Mobile Development through a free, comprehensive 8-week course.
Develhope is the first social impact coding school in Italy. Having reached +1000 students to date, its goal is to train young software developers and data analysts through 6 months innovative bootcamps, supporting them in landing their first job. The target audience of the school consists mainly of unemployed young people under 30 (e.g., NEETs), with a particular focus on women, members of vulnerable groups (e.g., people with disabilities, migrants, refugees). Yet the Develhope Team has moved the first steps of its international expansion last year, launching localized training courses in Turkey, Spain, and conducting selected pilot projects in Kenya, Nigeria and Eastern European countries.
Thanks to the support of the Digital for Development (D4D) Hub of the European Commission, of which Develhope is an active member, the tech school has connected with Orange and GIZ to continue working on its mission in countries where the Orange Digital Centers are based.
Orange and the German Development Cooperation Agency work together as part of a development partnership within the develoPPP programme: their goal is to foster youth employability and promote social inclusion, while supporting sustainable growth and the country's digital transformation through Orange Digital Center (ODC).
Digital Center (ODC) is an ecosystem entirely dedicated to the development of digital skills and innovation, presents in 17 countries in Middle East and Africa and 8 countries in Europe, that support, train, and guide young people and those with innovative ideas, to enhance their employability and prepare them for the jobs of the future (AI, cybersecurity, etc.) or encourage them to become digital entrepreneurs. The Orange Digital Centers bring together a range of free programs open to everyone all in one place, from digital training for young people to startup acceleration, as well as support and investment for project leaders.
"We are extremely proud to launch this program in Egypt, in collaboration with amazing partners like Orange and GIZ. Develhope's core mission is to combat youth unemployment by fostering digital skills that are crucial in today's job market. Together, we are not just training the next generation of software developers; we are building a brighter and more equitable future for young talents”, says Massimiliano Costa, Founder and CEO of Develhope. Formerly Head of ShareTheMeal, the UN World Food Programme fundraising app, Massimiliano founded Develhope to meet the demand for junior tech talent on the market, training unemployed young people, women and men from the most vulnerable groups in Southern Italy, and beyond.
The Nexford Employer Survey has revealed that 78% of Egyptian companies struggle to find talent with the right skills, despite the 600,000 graduates that enter the country’s universities each year. Microsoft estimates that 95 Million new developers will be needed at the global level by 2025. Thanks to the Mobile Android bootcamp of Develhope in partnership with Orange and GIZ, people aged 22-30 and residing in Cairo will have the opportunity to add a valuable piece to their education in tech, as well as increasing the chances of starting a professional career. ICT graduates with a background knowledge in mobile programming can access the course. The program will kick off on September the 25th, and will be delivered in a hybrid format to offer a more personalized learning experience.
The program is free of charge for the selected students, thanks to the contribution of Orange and GIZ in working to eliminate financial barriers and making quality education accessible to a wider audience.
